Nearly everyone has mixed feelings about him- or herself, feeling good about some things and bad or insecure about others.  Explain these mixed feelings we have about ourselves sometimes.  In the story, what things does the speaker like about himself and dislike about himself?  Overall, how does he see himself?  Why is life such a tug-of-war?  Do you think the speaker sees himself differently after the incident on the train?  How would relate this story to your own life? Explain.

Sme people feel not so good about themselves because they get that from a lot of times from their own family. The speaker is say the way I understand it is that he's not secure of himself and he thinks he can't do anything because of how he lives and how life is for him at a teen. I think that the mind plays with you back and forth and that's why it's a tug of war, there's time you want to do what is in front of your eyes but then you don't so it's like back and forth kind of thing I. Believe that you got to try new things to see how it goes because you'll never know until you try. Yes at time it might be different and scary but you don't know if you'll like it if you don't try. And that a shell that needs to be broke. At one point.

  1.  the first is talking about someone that died and they will go to them and talk to the and the other one is a son talking to a mom remembeing the past. And I think they are trying to bring up those moment that died along time ago and bring them up and not forget. I like both because one was about visiting and still remembeing that person that died, and the other one was memories that you look back at about people. And also to be careful in what you tell others becaus ether might not think the same way or do something because of what you said or even who you are.

I think is was how different she was and in a way I think she was a little rude. At the place she was supposibly being nice and pretend she was a good person but once they left she ignored what the girl said. To show that people pretend to be something they are not at all and when the are away from  others they are someone else. I don't like how she was toward the little girl because she was trying to tell her that she didn't feel so good but she ignored her, but when the girl threw up she got made and yelled, it wasn't her fault that she didn't listen when she told her because she tried to so something like that wouldn't happen but she didn't so. And I think that's how it is sometimes.

To me it depends on the people, which they think it's ok or if its not ok. If its disrespecting to them that I think it should be a name frm teams. And also when people do it beyond the limit and add things that are not right well that something that you shouldn't do. So for my opinion it depends on things because I don't like when people go beyond limits on things like that.so for me to not have problems make sure that people are ok with it.

Blog #17 (min. 1 paragraph)
The title of the piece suggests that strangers have sought permission to ask personal questions of the speaker.  This implies that they want to learn something.  At the end of the conversation, what have they learned about the speaker? How could the stranger start over and have a meaningful conversation in which to learn something worthwhile about one another?  How can dialogue and conversation help improve our knowledge of one another?  How can listening be a better skill than speaking?
The speaker has learned about native Americans, about great grandma it lover what they were. Ask what they are where their from and stuff like that. To explain and ask meaning ful questions and make sence and also stay on the same topic and not ask random question and not got back and forth doing that. They should just have no topic and if it leads to something else then it's ok because it fits the conversation. In this one they went back and forth and also was random and not same topics.

  1. How do the author’s mother and grandmother react when he falls in love with a Japanese woman?  Why is the author so concerned about marrying someone who is not Mexican?  Do you agree with Gary Soto that family background is as important as ethnicity in determining how well a young couple might get along?
  2. Examine different points of view about marrying outside one’s culture and identify the factors that distinguish groups from one another. (Examples might be race, religion, and social class.)  Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of marrying outside one’s group.

I think that they dnt agree with him beause they are different, and they think that they have money and wouldn't go out with someone that is poor. And also every in the family married someone that was Mexicans just like them selves. I think it does really matter what they are I think it matters how they are with which and what they like and how they treat each other. But some family think that that's important, but not everyone. People can talk and say mean things, their life can be hard because their own family won't agree and they might lose family. But it's on a person if they are ok to lose their family for love that's their own choice to do and it's like a sacrifice and maybe someday their family will accept it.

memoir is a narrative account of a personal experience.  There are many memoir pieces used in our anthology, “A Multicultural Reader”.  Blog about the following topics:
  1. Why do you think our book includes so many memoir pieces? (Look at the table of contents.  Each selection is identified by its style.)
  2. What makes memoir writing suitable to exploring the theme of cultural diversity?  Explain.
  3. Why do we find it interesting to read about the personal experiences and feelings of others?  (Consider why we also find it interesting to watch the personal experiences and feelings of others in the dozens (hundreds?) of reality shows on TV.)

So it can explain what is about and what it means. It was a lot of details and you can think about how the image is. I think because you can have things in common and learn and always they can give you a message. And also you can be helpful in a way.

  1. Have you ever been stereotyped about your age, gender, race, ethnicity, where you live, clothing style, music you listen to,etc.?  Explain.  How did it make you feel?  Have you ever stereotyped someone based on any of those things?  Why?  Explain.
  2. What effect does stereotyping have on people?  Explain.
Yes I have been stereotype about my age, and race mostly there are others but the are the most big one I think. When people look at me when I'm like in a corn stop of something they look at me like I'm going to steal because they thing I'm young which I'm not I'm 18, I get that because I'm so short and I look younger then my age. Also my race people think that I'm crazy and Wild all the time and trouble maker because I'm Puerto Rican and they think that all Puerto Ricans are the same which is a lie because we aren't the same. It doesn't matter of what race you are because everyone is different people just choose to be wild and crazy. Stereotypes gets me mad because people judge before even knowing who you really are, since you look this way and stuff they always come to conclusion of oh she or he is this way watch them or something. Well it's not that way because everyone is different we don't act the same. And I never judge any one of their front cover because that something that I think is mean and harsh, they can be something that you never thought they were like so I never judge people because stereotype I think is like judging people by its front cover. I think that it has a big effect on people because when someone judges you it makes you feel the lowest and it hurts so I think it has a big effect on people and everyone because people don't like that.

A 20-year-old African/Japanese American explains how his “special” hair is a metaphor for struggling with his identity as a mixed-race person in America.  The author refers to America’s attitudes about race as its “whack color game.”  What do you think he means by that?  How does America focus on race?  How can this affect how individuals identify themselves?  Explain.  Use examples from the essay and real life.

I think that what he means by "whack color game" is that people see how other will react in things if they looked a little different from their own race to see if any one notices or does something or even say something. It can affect how people look at you when you try to be different from your same race, you might like so,etching that other race have or do and you might want to do the same. We all have likes that our own race might not like and some people are willing to try that. But there are some people that don't like that their own race do thing alike other race. They choose to do things different because you can give a message they choose to do things different because they like what it mean or stands for. So it just depend on what you like and I think that's ok because you might like how things are done different ways.

Many children of immigrants try to fit into their new country by turning away from their parents’ culture and acting like their peers.  How does Mona find her place in her new school?  Explain.  How do you think the narrator’s experiences will help her find her way?  Explain.

At first she was just a normal new kid in the school but then someone started to help and she realized she was just different. She started to learn how they did things so she can fit in, to me i think that she learned fast she, of course said things different but she hardly knew English but she did ok with learn how to say words and how to do things that others did at that school. She mad a friend and that friend helped her a lot and a lot other the other student wanted to know about her. She learned and catches on to things very fast so it was easy for her to fit in and learn their way.

paragraph) -- Describe the grudge Kaitlin holds against her father.  How did it originate?  What has kept it going?  What tone does the author take when she describes her father and family?  Why does this happen in families sometimes?  How can people find common ground

She gets really frustrated with her farther becuase he really does really care about her thoughts. He really only thought about himself and his job and his money, that's all he thought sbout. It has kept going becuase he stayed likebthatcand never change, didn't think about what was around him he only paid attention to what mattered to him. He never help her at all she tried to get help and see if he can be a real dad but never happen. The author made it with a little anger and like what ever tone becuase she was tried of him acting how he was acting. Sometimes if happens becuase they are raising their children how they were raised becuase at parents years they are raise really different and they get raised hard so they can learn how to take care of themselves.

I think that the writer trying to give a message and express something. Sometimes what others do may affect others around them, they might not see it but they notice without you knowing. This can  influence people different , they can take it different ways. Also people probably felt the same way, sometime we all fight within our selfs. Part of ourselves want to do something but then something in us tells us no or Im not sure. There's times that people just want to get away and not see what they see. Knowing that people do things can affect a person and you see it all the time it's. hard to move on and let that pass. Also the writer wanted to point out that people stand out from the crowd and its hard to fit in with other. But that doesn't mean that you can be important to them either.

As a parent you can encourage your child to do things but you have to also give them a chance to do what they like. They do not fail on what you as a parent want but one thing that bring to that is that they might not be happy in what they are doing. As a parent you might not see that but they know what they like or dislike and when a parent wants their child to do something specific its because they didn't get to do that one thing so they would like their child to do it so they can be proud of them. I think as a parent you need to let your child explore things and see what they like not what you like because that might not bring happiness to them at all. And also when they feel that pressure they can be really hard on themselves and that can cause a big problem in their life.

Struggle to be an all American girl

  1. Why is it hard for children in any culture to relate to their parents’ ideas about what’s best for them?
  2. Do students typically feel a “disconnect” with their parents’ backgrounds or cultural traditions?
  3. What might help students be open to learning from their parents’ experiences?

They reason why it think is becuase our parents are use to being more like the people from the past and they keep with there ways so they try to keep it in the family and children like to be different and change there way of living and how they are so it's hard to do that when you have to follow your parents rules as a child.
Some time student do feel disconnect with their parent ps becuase sometime they want to change it a little or maybe make it they way so it can be more enjoyable. Some parent stick with the same tradition but as years go by people like to change it and make it more expandable and more exciting in their new way of experiencing there feeling and other things.
I think that they can learn by not doing a mistake they did because they know the turn out if that mistake so that something really good to know.
Some parents make mistakes and their child might do the same and they get mad but just remember they were just like you when you were that age. Parents have to understand that their children like to explore and see whatvtheyvfind and they can change, it doesn't hurt to let them learn on their own for what might be a mistake. We all have to try and see what is the outcome of things and if it's a mistake we should all learn from it.  As years go by people tend to change things to chave it different for once and people might like it that way.

My poem

     Who you are

A drop of fear
there's a blessing so don't have fear
A drop of tears
theres resting so don't have tears
A drop of freedom
So stand up and say your reasons
And say this is me and I'm not changing

The short story “The Baddest Dog in Harlem”, shows a community that has serious issues with violence, crime, and poverty.  How does living in an environment where this is a daily reality affect individuals and families?  What can people do to help end the cycle of violence, crime, and poverty?

Living in an environment where it's dangerous affect people in a lot of ways, it can make them not trust anyone or even have them not even step outside. Living around that can make people have a health problem ever because they get so nerves and scared. People can make a change and stand up, they can bring the city or even the government into this problems but you have to have evidence in what your trying to change and also have others agree with what your saying. Some people are afraid to try to fix where they live at but if you have a family that you care about And have no choice of living there well you should think of changing how things are there. I believe that anyone can make that change and it will help in so many ways and people will see that and will have the courage to to the same and once you know it then it will be pasted on.

In the essay it stated what really happens in this place called a place of freedom, most African Americans are judged and thought of a person that cause things like a crime, which I believe isn't the truth. The reason why I think that not all are like that is because it's on the individual not as a whole group. They are the same person and they don't have everything the same, just because of their color they always have to be judge And thought wrong and that is for all race too because it's not just African american that are judge and thought wrong about.
I have been in a situation and see situations that people think of you wrong just because of you color or how you look or your race. And also the thing that you so is some race talk about there own race and that something that I dislike because , why would you talk bad about your own race and point fingers like every person is the same in that race, that's not true. I believe the reason why people are still this was is becuase what their family members believed moved it on to the next family member and what they believe is tought to them and then they believe it. Once your family believe what they believe they teach you that way to believe.

I really can't think of any way you can use a camera as a weapon besides hitting it with someone but what you can do get evidence of what happen. You can take a picture of the situation of what happen that day or that moment. It can have details of what happen in case someone don't believe your word in what happen. But sometimes pictures aren't always true so you have to be careful of what you believe. Some pictures get what sometimes we can see so that would be something important to prove something. And also it can give a message to something or someone, it can express things.

autobiography

I think that people make autobiographies becuase they would like people as years go by to know what they did and how life was for them. Autobiographies tell a story and also inspire people to do things or to not be afraid to say what they believe. When it's written it usually starts from who they are the life story like where they were born and things like that. After they describe there like they tell the story of what's they did that impacted the city or where they were or maybe they whole world. I think that it's really a good idea to write that story so people remember of what you did or who you were and their story can be past down as the years go by and things change and improve becuase they also say the problems they had so when that is said people know what doesn't work or what can be improved. So it's important for people to write their story and inspire people with what they did or do or said or say.

My Background

My background

My name is Ashley Marie pagan, I am 18 years old. I was born November 29, 1994 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. My whole family was born in Puerto Rico that I know of, but my dad my mom told me he was born in New York. I was baptized in  a Catholic Church, but ever since I started going to church, I go to an christain church becuase I like going to christain church. I am thinking in the future I will be christain or follow their ways. I am not religious at all but you could say I'm more into that then my familynis, they don't understand me in that prospective. I celebrate most holiday, the most common one. We Puerto Rican celebrate three kings day, I love that holiday becuase I think that it's a really nice holiday. In that holiday you are usually with family or friends and you just eat and open presents if there is any, its kinda like Christmas but in Christmas you get the little presents and then three kings day you gets the big expensive presents. That holiday is a lot about give to family or friends or even people you may not know, it's not all about presents it's just about loving and showing that you love everyone. I came to the United States when I was four years old, I don't remember anything about Puerto Rico. I love Puerto Rican food, not becuase I'm Puerto Rican but becuase it's a really good food. I haven't tried every Puerto Rican food but I know someday I will try the food that I haven't tried.
